Hughes India launches satellite internet

Hughes Communications India on Monday launched satellite internet service in India, offering connectivity to hard-to-reach locations.
The company, a joint venture of Hughes Network Systems of the US and telecom operator Bharti Airtel, will offer high throughput satellite (HTS) broadband using the Indian Space Research Organization's Geosynchronous Satellite (GSAT)-11 and GSAT-29 satellites.
HTS broadband has the capacity to offer bandwidth of up to 100Mbps, said Shivaji Chatterjee, senior vice-president of Hughes Communications India. Chatterjee said on 22 March that the service was expected to offer 2-10Mbps.
"Our service will have an average bandwidth of around 10Mbps, since such speeds are what is required in the markets that we are targeting. Capacitywise, we can go much higher, if there is industry demand for it," he said.
