Gang rivalry rocks Capital again, 1 killed in shoot-out

Delhi's ugly gang wars played out in the city's streets once again on Friday morning, when two men on a motorcycle shot dead a 38-year-old man, who was a relative of jailed gangster Manjeet Mahal, in front of his 10-year-old daughter in the city's northern fringes.

Investigators said the crime was likely the fallout of a bitter rivalry with Kapil Sangwan, another notorious criminal.

The incident took place around 7.30am in Nangal Thakran Village near Bawana. The victim, Deepak Thakran was out for a walk with his daughter, Ananya, who suffered minor injuries when the two suspects opened fire.

Deputy commissioner of police (outer-north) Hareshwar V Swami said a first information report (FIR) was filed under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita pertaining to murder.

No arrests were made in the case till the time of going to print.

Fear shrouded the tiny village, just a couple of kilometres from the Capital's northern border with Haryana, with over a dozen police personnel fanning out to secure the area According to the police, initial investigations showed that the victim, unlike his uncle, had no prior criminal record.

"Deepak had finished his BTech 1 degree and began share trading 1 after that. There are no criminal cases against him. We have reason to believe that he was murdered over the decade-long rivalry between his maternal uncle and Sangwan, alias Nandu, who is the kingpin of the Nandu gang," said senior police officer involved in the probe. "The motive behind the attack is currently under investigation," said Swami.
