MUMBAI: A day after a video showed him having an altercation with a probationary IPS officer and asking her to stop action against alleged illegal soil extraction, Maharashtra deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar on Friday issued a clarification, saying that he did not want to interfere in police work and was just only trying to "de-escalate" a tense situation.

Pawar's clarification comes as police registered a case against 19 people for allegedly obstructing IPS officer Anjana Krishna and other officials as they were taking action against illegal murum soil excavation in Solapur district.

In a video of the September 1 incident, which was widely circulated on social media, Krishna could be heard speaking to Pawar through a Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) worker's phone.
