60-Year-Old Man Diagnosed With GBS Dies in Pune Hosp

This is state's fifth GBS death; suspected cases now at 149

PUNE: The number of suspected deaths in Maharashtra due to Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), a rare neurological disorder, went up to five, when a 60-year-old man succumbed to his ailments on Friday. Pune district also reported nine fresh suspected GBS cases, taking the number to 149, said officials from the state public health department.

The patient from Warje-Malwadi passed away while undergoing treatment at Sassoon General Hospital (SGH).

The deceased was a patient of hypertension, who developed symptoms of acute gastroenteritis on January 16 whereupon he was admitted to SGH. He reportedly died around 12:30 pm on Friday. According to the report shared by the hospital, the cause of death was said to be from respiratory failure along with autonomic dysfunction, quadriplegia and GBS. He had no travel history and was admitted to the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) and put on ventilator support, said SGH officials.

According to health officials, of the 149 suspected cases, 124 patients were diagnosed as confirmed GBS cases.
