SER tests AI-based system to prevent elephant deaths

The South Eastern Railway (SER) has commenced a demo trial run of the latest artificial intelligence (AI)-based Elephant Intrusion Detection System (EDIS), which sends automatic alerts by detecting tusker movement through vibrations of footsteps and sounds from up to 200 metres away.
JAMSHEDPUR: The trial is underway in the Chakradharpur division of Jharkhand, railway officials said on Monday.
As part of an ongoing initiative to prevent railway accidents involving elephants, the proof-of-concept testing for EDIS was carried out along the Barabambo-Chakradharpur-Lotapahar section on Sunday and Monday, under the supervision of SER chief manager (signal & telecom) BK Patel.
Two elephants from Jamnagar, Gujarat, were brought in for the on-ground trial run of the system.
