Relief to Bihar power consumers despite no change in tariff

The impact of electricity bill on consumers having smart prepaid energy meters and those in rural areas will be softened, despite the Bihar Electricity Regulatory Commission not changing power tariff for 2025-26, said its chairman Amir Subhani, while pronouncing a common tariff order for North and South Bihar Power Distribution Company Ltd, in Patna on Friday.

"The order comes into effect from April 1 and will be effective till March 31 next year or till the issue of the next order," he said.

Around 60 lakh smart prepaid meter consumers of total 2.08 crore (approx.) power consumers in the state will get 25 paise per unit (kilo watt per hour or kWh) rebate, replacing the existing rebate of 3% (2% prompt payment rebate within due date, and 1% rebate on online recharge).

"This will result in an effective reduction of tariff by 25 paise per unit for consumers who get smart prepaid meter installed on their premises," said Subhani.
