Experts flag need for Demoiselle Cranes conservation

There is an urgent need for effective conservation measures to safeguard Demoiselle Cranes, locally known as Kurja, whose survival depends on the protection of their feeding and roosting habitats, the latest study conducted by the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) in collaboration with local conservationist Sevaram Mali stated while emphasising the critical role of Khichan in Rajasthan as a wintering ground for these migratory birds.

Every year, approximately 20,000 cranes migrate to the small village of Khinchan, making it a globally significant site along the Central Asian Flyway. The study also brought attention to significant threats faced by the Demoiselle Cranes, including collisions with high-tension power lines.
