Incinerate Union Carbide waste in 72 days: HC after govt's report

The Jabalpur bench of the Madhya Pradesh high court on Thursday ordered toxic waste from the Union carbide plant that triggered the Bhopal gas tragedy be incinerated at a rate of 270 kg per hour at Pithampur in Dhar district and the process be completed in 72 days, after the state government presented a status report showing the disposal caused no harm to the environment.

BHOPAL/JABALPUR:

The two-judge bench of chief justice Suresh Kumar Kait and justice Vivek Jain said, "The state government should burn the toxic waste in 72 days and submit the report to the court on June 30."

"The court said the government should ensure that the burning of toxic waste will be done according to guidelines and rules with no negligence. The people living there should not face any kind of problem. All this waste should be burnt under the supervision of the Central Pollution Control Board and Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board," said Prashant Singh, advocate general.

In all, about 30 MT of the 337MT toxic waste removed from the Union Carbide remains to be incinerated.
