BENGALURU: The Karnataka caste survey report has recommended increasing reservations for Backward Communities (BCs) from the existing 32% to 51%, officials aware of the matter said on Saturday.

According to officials, the Socio-Economic and Educational Survey report also highlights that the population of BC is 70%. The report also suggests that 51% should be given to BC communities in educational institutions in the state. It cited the example of Tamil Nadu and Jharkhand, which are providing 69% and 77% reservations, respectively, as per the backward class population, the officials said. According to the survey report, the population of Backward Communities in 1A category is 3,496,638, 1B - 7,392,313, 2A - 7,778,209, 2B - 7,525,880, 3A - 7,299,577 and the Backward Community in the 3B category is 15,437,113, the officials said. The total population of OBCs is 41,630,153. The officials, citing the report, said that the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes population is 10,929,347 and 4,281,289, respectively. The sample survey comprises a population of 59,814,942.
