Music body seeks to intervene in HC hearing vs OpenAI

The Delhi high court on Monday issued notice in an application filed by Indian Music Industry (IMI) and its affiliates T-Series and Saregama, seeking intervention in the news agency Asian News International (ANI)'s copyright suit against OpenAI, alleging unauthorised use of its original news content by the US-based firm.
NEW DELHI:
A bench of justice Amit Bansal sought OpenAI and ANI's response, and fixed February 21 as the next date of hearing, despite his initial reluctance over allowing an intervention by other industries that would result in expanding the suit's scope.
"We can't keep expanding the scope. Hundreds of industries are affected by it (AI). I think the scope keeps widening. You can't keep expanding. I can't hear 100 people. This will open the door for 100 (other industries)," justice Bansal said to senior advocate Chander M Lall, appearing for IMI.
The ANI case is being keenly watched, for the outcome of this case could significantly shape the jurisprudence surrounding copyright in the digital age, setting a precedent for how original news content could be protected against unauthorised use by AI-driven platforms.
IMI claimed the intervention was necessary since the jurisprudence set in the case would have an impact on the music industry, determine the manner for interpreting the Copyright Act, 1957 in future and dictate the rights of copyright owners.
OpenAI did not respond to HT's requests seeking comment on the matter.

Ignored Sarfaraz to not move up the batting order
Gearing up for a fresh Ranji season with an eye on bigger personal honours is what Sarfaraz Khan has done a lot of. Being constantly on the waiting list is also something he's learned to deal with. It may have led to frustration, but it never broke him. To lose favour after making it to the elite level can be deflating though and will test the resilience of the middle-order batter.
