SC Lets Uttarakhand Off With Caution in Case About Forest Funds

The Uttarakhand government, under scrutiny for spending compensatory afforestation funds on items such as iPhones, laptops and office furniture, got a reprieve from the Supreme Court on Wednesday, with the court sparing the state from further examination while issuing a stern warning against repeating such actions.

Earlier this month, while reviewing the use of Compensatory Afforestation Management and Planning Authority (Campa) funds in the TN Godavarman case on forest protection, a bench comprising justices Bhushan R Gavai and AG Masih had sought an explanation from Uttarakhand chief secretary Radha Raturi. A Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report flagged misuse of Campa funds in the state between 2019 and 2022.
