PRAYAGRAJ: In an unprecedented display of accommodation, sadhus of the 13 recognised Akharas - ancient Hindu monastic orders - postponed their ritualistic bathing procession at the Maha Kumbh following Wednesday's early morning stampede that claimed at least 30 lives.

The decision marked a significant departure from tradition for these holy orders, including the Naga ascetics, who are historically known for their quick temper and occasional violent responses to perceived slights to their religious privileges.

At the Maha Kumbh, tradition dictates that sadhus have priority at the Sangam ghats - the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati rivers. Common pilgrims are permitted to take their ritual dips only after the 'sadhu' have completed their ceremonies, though other ghats remain accessible to all.
