New Measures at 60 Stations, Says Vaishnaw

Two days after at least 18 people died in a stampede at New Delhi Railway Station, Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Monday said that taking lessons from the "unfortunate" incident, Indian Railways (IR) is set to create holding areas at 60 railway stations, including the New Delhi station, over the next six months.

The stampede that took place at platform 14, as thousands attempted to board trains heading to Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh festival, has left 18 dead and 15 wounded.

"The incident is very unfortunate and it could not have been any worse. As part of our learnings, we have decided to ensure that as part of crowd management at railway stations, especially during festivals and special occasions like these, we will be coming up with dedicated holding areas at 60 railway stations, including New Delhi Railway Station (NDLS)," Vaishnaw said.
