The Centre Made the Changes in Compliance With a SC Judgment Striking Down Rules that Perpetuate Caste Discrimination
NEW DELHI: The ministry of home affairs (MHA) has amended the model prison manual to address the issue of caste-based discrimination among inmates, officials aware of the matter said on Wednesday.
The changes have been made in compliance with the October 2024 Supreme Court judgment in Sukanya Shantha vs Union of India, which ended the long-standing practice of caste-based discrimination in prisons, declaring the provisions in prison manuals that perpetuate it as unconstitutional and calling for immediate reforms.
