The latest data released by the Statistical Centre for the Cooperation Council for the Arab Countries of the Gulf (GCC-Stat) revealed that the expected spending by visitors to GCC countries is projected to reach $223.7 billion in 2034, while the expected contribution of incoming visitor spending to total exports will reach 13.4 per cent.

The Centre also indicated that GCC countries are achieving steady progress in many tourism-related indicators.

The data demonstrate that total international visitor spending in GCC countries amounted to $135.5 billion in 2023, with a 28.9 per cent increase compared to the figures recorded in 2019.

The GCC countries ranked first in the Middle East and North Africa region's 2024 Safety and Security Index. All GCC countries scored above the regional average of 5.86 points, taking into consideration that the index ranges from 1 to 7 points. They also ranked among the top 6 countries in terms of passport power in the Arab region.

Meanwhile total public spending by the six GCC countries - the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, Qatar, and Bahrain-is estimated to reach $542.1 billion in the current financial year 2025, according to data released by the Muscat-based GCC Statistical centre (GCC-Stat).

Most GCC countries have projected an increase in public spending in 2025 compared to their 2024 spending estimates. This increase is considered a key driver of economic growth in the GCC region and is directed toward completing infrastructure projects and stimulating growth in certain economic sectors, in line with strategic development plans.

Police must rise to meet the moment

I have been a close observer of American policing for most of my life. During my 30-year career in law enforcement, I served as a patrol officer, detective, trainer, and from 1972 to 1993 the chief of police in Madison, Wisconsin. I've seen brutality, courage and redemption in this line of work. But I have never seen a greater police-related threat to our democracy than what we are witnessing today.
