Pope Francis' death prompting an outpouring of grief and tributes from religious leaders in the UAE and across the region.

The pontiff died yesterday, a day after Easter, marking the end of a life dedicated to faith and the betterment of humanity.

Grand Imam of Al Azhar, Ahmed Al Tayyeb, a prominent Egyptian Islamic scholar, shared a heartfelt tribute to Pope Francis, referring to him as his brother. Al Tayyeb praised the Pope's deep commitment to humanity, recognising him as a true leader who devoted his life to serving people, advocating for the rights of the oppressed, refugees, and those on the margins of society.

'True friend to Muslims'

Al Tayyeb conveyed through Al Azhar's Facebook page. “He was a true friend to Muslims, sincere in his pursuit of peace. His final words, especially in defence of Palestine and the oppressed in Gaza, will be remembered with deep reverence.”
