What type of proportional representation is needed?

THE first General Election I can recall was that of February 1974.

What type of proportional representation is needed?

To me its most striking feature was the fact that the Liberal Party, then including such names as future Labour cabinet member Peter Hain, gained over six million votes but a mere 14 seats. And I suppose I’ve been a supporter of proportional representation (PR) ever since.

The inequities of First Past The Post was shown in the 2024 General Election, when despite only gaining 33.7 per cent of the vote, Labour secured a landslide majority with 400 plus seats.

And, with more parties in the mix, the situation could be even worse next time.

Indeed it has been argued that a party could become the Government with only a 25 per cent vote share.
