ONE of the country’s most outstanding private collections of historic horse-drawn carriages saw pre-sale estimates left behind in the dust when it went under the hammer in a spectacular online auction.

The 26 carriages and carts (plus a Victorian London fire engine, a pony pulled bath chair and a 19th-century hearse) ranged from vehicles that once bowled around some of the country’s great aristocratic estates through to others that have starred in films and television series.
