THE hilly areas of Kathua district, including Billawar and Basohli, have once again been thrust into the national spotlight due to a fresh wave of civilian killings.

The latest tragic incident involves the brutal deaths of three missing civilians whose bodies were discovered near a nullah in the upper reaches of Billawar. This comes barely a month after two other civilians were found dead with their throats slit in the same region. The alarming frequency and nature of these killings have not only shaken the local populace but have also left security agencies scrambling for answers. The victims, who were merely returning from a marriage function, had no known affiliations with security forces or political entities. The lack of any clear motive behind their killings raises serious concerns. Given that terror groups have historically used such attacks to instill fear among local communities, the possibility of a terrorist angle cannot be dismissed outright.
