A CARE home in Deal has been placed into special measures to protect patients after one person was given too much medication.

- By HEDI MEHREZ

Inspectors from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) identified a number of issues at St Anselm's Nursing Home during visits in January and February, including cleaning products left unattended.

The CQC has downgraded the home's overall rating from good to inadequate. Inspectors found six breaches of regulation relating to providing people with person-centred care, consent, safe care and treatment, dignity, staffing and the overall management of the service. Ratings for the "safe", "effective" and "well-led" were all downgraded from good to inadequate.

The "caring" category fell from good to requires improvement while responsive was not inspected and remains rated as good.

The service has now been placed the service into special measures, meaning it will be closely monitored while improvements are made. Special measures also set out a clear timeframe for required changes and the action the CQC may take if standards are not met.

The home has acknowledged the findings and said it is fully committed to ensuring "the highest standards" of care. Since the inspection, a spokesperson said the home has taken "significant steps" to address the issues highlighted in the report.
