THE RAJASTHAN VISION: A STATEWIDE NETWORK OF TIGER CONNECTIVITY
Tigers are not just the apex predators of our forests— they are ecological sentinels that signal the health of our ecosystems. India, which holds over 70% of the world's wild tiger population, bears a profound responsibility in conserving these majestic creatures. Among the many Indian states with tiger populations, Rajasthan has emerged as a key stakeholder in the future of tiger conservation. While the state is known for iconic reserves such as Ranthambhore, Sariska, and Mukundra Hills, it is now planning an ambitious expansion of its tiger conservation efforts.
At the heart of this expansion is the development of critical tiger corridor elements—strategically significant patches of forest and landscape that can help connect isolated tiger populations and facilitate genetic flow across the state. In a landmark decision led by CM Bhajan Lal Sharma, the Rajasthan State Wildlife Board has identified Shergarh (Baran), Bassi (Chittorgarh), and Gol (Dausa) as critical corridor zones, which are now set to undergo targeted ecological restoration and management.
WHAT ARE CRITICAL TIGER CORRIDOR ELEMENTS?
Tiger corridors are stretches of habitat—usually forested or wild—through which tigers move between protected areas. These corridors are essential for maintaining genetic diversity, reducing inbreeding, and ensuring the long-term survival of isolated tiger populations. However, over the years, many corridors across India have been disrupted by roads, mining, human settlements, and agricultural expansion.
