GUARDIANS OF THE GREEN

Rajasthan, the desert heart of India, is often painted with hues of arid landscapes and scorching sun.

Yet, hidden in its sandy folds are stories of resilience, innovation, and hope led by individuals who have dedicated their lives to preserving the state's delicate ecology. These six environmental achievers exemplify how grassroots commitment can shape a sustainable future. Their initiatives span water conservation, afforestation, plastic waste reduction and climate education, making them the true guardians of Rajasthan's green legacy.

Rajendra Singh

The Waterman of India

From the parched terrains of Alwar rose a crusader whose mission was to give life back to dying rivers. Rajendra Singh fondly called the "Waterman of India," spearheaded one of India's most impactful water conservation movements. Through his NGO, Tarun Bharat Sangh, he built over 8,600 johads traditional rainwater harvesting structures reviving more than 1,000 villages. His efforts led to the rejuvenation of five rivers: Arvari, Ruparel, Sarsa, Bhagani and Jahajwali.

Singh's approach is deeply rooted in community involvement and traditional wisdom. He empowered villagers to take ownership of their water resources, ensuring long-term sustainability. His work earned him international acclaim, including the Ramon Magsaysay Award (2001) and the prestigious Stockholm Water Prize (2015). Rajendra Singh continues to advocate for water literacy, aiming to make India water-secure through decentralised water management.
