FM Meets GST Panels on Rate Cuts, Reforms

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman made a presentation to the Group of Ministers (GoMs) on compensation cess, health and life insurance, and rate rationalisation on the Centre's proposal to overhaul the GST regime, with the introduction of a two-tier structure, with 5% merit and 18% standard rate, and a 40% special rate for a few "sin goods."
Besides the granular details of the slabs rejig, the GoMs are learnt to have been informed of its impact on the economy and revenue implications even as they were asked to debate the proposal threadbare before concluding.
