Global higher education analysts QS Quacquarelli Symonds released the rankings by subject for 2025 on Wednesday. A total of 79 Indian institutions featured in the rankings, 10 more than last year.

Nine Indian institutions featured in the top 50 across subjects. In addition to the Indian School of Mines Dhanbad, these included the IITs in Delhi, Bombay, Madras, and Kharagpur, the IIMs in Ahmedabad and Bangalore, and the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). The only private Indian institution that featured in the top 50 across subjects was Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences, which was ranked 26 in Dentistry.

While it remains in the top 50, IIT Madras has seen a drop in its ranking, from 16 last year to 31 this year in Petroleum Engineering.
