ANY CLIMATE FRAMEWORK MUST AVOID ADDITIONAL REPORTING BURDEN: YADAV
ARGUING AGAINST AN imposition of adaptation goals on countries, India on Thursday said countries must be free to decide their adaptation priorities and given the flexibility to define and measure progress using their own national systems.
Speaking at an event on adaptation at COP30 climate meeting in Belem, Brazil, India’s Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav said a global framework on adaptation, which is under development, must avoid additional reporting burdens on countries and should respect their diverse national contexts.
Countries at the climate negotiations have been trying to define a Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA), a set of metrics related to well-being of land, oceans, biodiversity and other natural ecosystems, which the world as a whole can strive to achieve. The idea is to have a common goal just like the 1.5 or 2 degree Celsius temperature targets that serve as a common goal on mitigation.
