Praise for crews after vape sparks bin lorry fire

The fire broke out in the back of the council lorry at around 6.30am on Wednesday, July 2, on Magdalen Street. The rear of the lorry was left completely destroyed, after becoming so hot that the metal walls of the waste compartment were melted.

Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service attended and closed the road as firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze through holes in the roof of the vehicle.

As soon as the lorry crew noticed the smoke in their mirrors, the driver deployed the vehicle's compacting mechanism to cut off the air supply to the fire and contain it within the vehicle. However, the fire had already spread quickly, melting the electrics and preventing the mechanism from working fully.
