SVEN-GORAN ERIKSSON’s dignity and good humour in the face of terminal cancer was testament to the remarkable character of England’s first foreign manager.
Eriksson, who died yesterday aged 76, was never bitter after revealing his diagnosis in January 2024, just as he never stewed on the disappointments of England’s so-called ‘Golden Generation’, which he led for five years from 2001 to 2006.
Instead, Eriksson enjoyed a marvellous send-off, which included fulfilling a lifelong dream of managing Liverpool when he took charge of Red Legends team in March and dining with David Beckham, his former England captain, earlier this year.
