Boris WhatsApps deadline extended

COVID Inquiry chairwoman Baroness Hallett today extended a deadline until 4pm on Thursday for the Government to hand over unredacted documents including Boris Johnson’s WhatsApp messages

But she rejected a request from the Cabinet Office for a longer extension until Monday June 5. She also demanded a statement from a senior civil servant “verified by a statement of truth” to explain the Cabinet Office’s insistence that it does not have in its possession Mr Johnson’s WhatsApp messages.
Furthermore, she requested a “chronology” of correspondence between the ex-PM and the Cabinet Office over the latter’s attempts to get the relevant material.
The update appeared to highlight a deep level of mistrust between the Covid Inquiry and the Government.
But Rishi Sunak said he was “confident” in the Government’s approach of refusing to hand over some unredacted documents including Mr Johnson’s WhatsApp messages and diaries between January 2020 and February 2022.
