THE United States goes to the polls in crucial midterm elections today with the Republican party predicted to wrest back control of Congress with all 435 seats in the House of Representatives up for grabs.
Democrats currently have a majority of eight seats with polling suggesting their rivals will make significant gains. Roughly a third of the 100 Senate seats are also being contested along with key state governorships.
In the first national election since the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot, Democrats have tried to focus key races on the nation’s political values. They argue that Republican victories could reshape the country, such as by eliminating abortion rights nationwide and threatening democracy.
