Farming seniors to be hailed as part of initiative by RSABI

A major initiative to celebrate the huge contribution of older people to Scottish agriculture has been launched by RSABI.
-
At a time when many senior members of Scotland’s rural communities — including those in Dumfries and Galloway — are feeling anxious about the future, including concerns over proposed inheritance tax changes, the Ploughing On campaign aims to remind them just how valued and vital they are.
Supported by organisations across Scottish agriculture, the campaign will run throughout the winter and share the stories and memories of the highs and lows of farming across many decades, and the wisdom of senior people in farming and crofting who have dedicated their lives to agriculture.
It has the backing of NFU Scotland, Scottish Association of Young Farmers Clubs, Quality Meat Scotland, National Sheep Association, Scottish Tenant Farmers Association, Scottish Quality Cereals, Institute of Auctioneers and Appraisers Scotland and the National Beef Association.
Carol McLaren, CEO of RSABI said: “Agriculture can be a lonely business at any age, but those in their more senior years can be particularly vulnerable to the impact of isolation especially during the winter months.
“Inheritance tax changes, expected in April 2026, are putting unexpected additional pressure on farming families and very sadly some older farmers are describing feeling they are a liability or a burden on their farming business and family.
“So over the coming months, we'll be celebrating the more senior people in our community and all they have contributed over the years.
“We'll be sharing memories and encouraging friendships to rekindle and new friendships to be forged among our senior farming folk.”
RSABI will also be encouraging people to take time to look out for older individuals in their communities.
