Councillors will pitch in to debate World Cup bank holiday proposal

Political group leaders will kick off a debate on whether or not Dumfries and Galloway Council will grant a special day’s holiday for this year’s World Cup qualifiers.

First Minister John Swinney recently proposed that Monday, June 15 is designated a national bank holiday to mark Scotland’s participation in the football tournament for the first time in 28 years.
The nation will be in party mode as Scotland take on Haiti on Sunday, June 14 at 2am - however this doesn't automatically mean that all public organisations and private companies will go along with Swinney’s plans.
Each of Scotland's 32 councils will make their own decision on whether to grant leave.
Dumfries and Galloway Council is the region’s largest employer with over 6,500 staff members, and it has been revealed that there could be two rounds of discussions before any holiday decision is agreed upon.
Speaking at the full council meeting on Monday, council convener Katie Hagmann said:
