Edward Ill established the Order of the Garter, the most senior order of knighthood in the British honours system.

1793: King Louis XVI, aged 38, the last king of France who was overthrown during the French Revolution, went on trial and was sentenced to the guillotine. It brought an end to more than 1,000 years of continuous monarchy in France. The sentence would be carried out two days later.
