Haffkine Accused of Favouring Private Firm; Vijay Wadettiwar Raises Alarm in Assembly

Senior Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar alleged in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly on Tuesday that the state funded Haffkine Institute is prioritising the interests of a private company over public healthcare.

Raising the issue through a ‘Point of Information’, Wadettiwar claimed there is a questionable move to transfer a highly valuable biological asset—referred to as a "strain’ used in lifesaving vaccines—to a private entity. He described the strain used for manufacturing the DPT (triple) vaccine as a rare and historic scientific resource.
