Seagulls supersub to rescue with spectacular equaliser

- BY IAN BAKER

SO KOST EFFECTIVE

CHARALAMPOS KOSTOULAS scored a contender for goal of the season to rescue a dramatic point for Brighton - in a game marred by yet more VAR controversy.

The Greek substitute scored with an injury-time overhead kick to maintain the Seagulls’ unbeaten start to 2026.

His spectacular strike cancelled out a hotly-disputed Marcus Tavernier penalty, given after technology had intervened again. Furious Brighton fans chanted “you're not fit to referee” at official Paul Tierney after he overturned his original decision to book Amine Adli for diving and award the spot-kick.

The game has been dogged by less than clear-cut video technology overturning calls recently, and this was another that will continue the debate.

Seagulls keeper Bart Verbruggen appeared to make only the slightest of contact on Adli’s trailing leg, with the Moroccan seemingly on his way to ground prior to the touch.
