The ancient Egyptians created false doors in tombs as portals to the afterlife. Romans had a god of doorways called Janus, below, who gave his name to January.

The world's oldest discovered door dates back 5,100 years, the era when Stonehenge was built. Made of wood, it was found during excavations for a car park in Zurich, Switzerland.

Britain's oldest door is inside Westminster Abbey, leading to the Chapter House and still in use. The five-panelled oak structure originated in the 1050s during the reign of Edward the Confessor.
