July Cup win a huge thrill for trainer

NO HALF MEASURES pulled off the biggest shock in July Cup history with a 66-1 winner that gave three-time champion jockey Richard Hughes his first Group One triumph as a trainer.

The filly’s neck margin from 12-1 chance Big Mojo - 40-1 shot Run To freedom took third in a race dominated by the underdogs - also put her jockey Neil Callan back in the big-race limelight.

Hughes (right) fought an uneven battle with the scales, and a drink problem, to lift the jockeys’ crown from 2012 to 2014 - his marquee victories included in the 2003 July Cup aboard Oasis Dream - before turning trainer 10 years ago.
