McDowell's Warriors work lands him centre stage with Scotland

Glasgow centre Stafford McDowall has been rewarded for some fine Warriors form with a Scotland starting jersey for tomorrow's Test against Italy.The 26-year-old takes over from stricken skipper Sione Tuipulotu, who is out of the Six Nations through injury.

Another Glasgow player, Scott Cummings, is also out for most if not all of the Championship.

In his place, at lock, Edinburgh veteran Dave Cherry is back at hooker for his first appearance since the 2023 World Cup.

And in the back row, former captain Jamie Ritchie wins a place. Jack Dempsey, who is just back from injury, starts on the bench.

On the whole, Townsend has been able to pick a much stronger squad than was feared a week ago.
