New tech expected to reduce risk of serious crashes

POLICE will fire sticky tracker “darts” on vehicles to cut the danger posed by high-speed chases.

Police Scotland has shelled out £450,000 to pilot hi-tech kit which allows officers to launch GPS devices on to cars and stalk suspects remotely to avoid a hot pursuit through the streets.

Road safety charity IAM RoadSmart welcomed the development. Its director Nicholas Lyes said: "While the police are highly trained, the person that they're chasing is clearly not.

"Every time there is a chase on the road, the risk to pedestrians and everyone else goes up significantly.

"Any technological advance that can reduce the chances of this happening could be a significant step.
