THE formal consultation process into the future of the professional game in Wales concluded yesterday, with growing indications the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) will move away from its controversial proposal to reduce the number of professional teams from four to two.

WRU set to move away from talk of axing two teams

Last month, WRU director of rugby and elite performance Dave Reddin revealed the union's preferred option was to cut the number of pro teams to two, both of which would be fully owned and operated by the WRU.

This model included plans for a national training campus and a centralised structure, aimed at improving efficiency and performance.

But the proposal has faced significant opposition from across the game.
