WHY TIME IS RUNNING OUT FOR THE LONELY TREE
The Lonely tree at Llyn Padarn, Llanberis
(Ian Cooper)
THE most famous tree in Wales, known as the Lonely Tree of Llanberis, is a testament to the impermanence of life.
Nestled amidst the pebbles of Llyn Padarn and set against the backdrop of Eryri’s mountains, this solitary tree has defied the odds to become a favourite subject for photographers seeking a touch of romance.
Situated at Y Glyn, an area fondly referred to as the “Lagoons’, the tree is exposed to the harsh weather that sweeps across the lake and ascends towards Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon). Despite the recent Storm Darragh wreaking havoc on forests across Wales, the Lonely Tree remained unscathed.
Perched on its own tiny island, the tree has withstood relentless winds and waves, often finding itself submerged when winter storms cause a surge in Llyn Padarn’s water levels. “Tough as old boots, that tree,’ remarked one admirer.
On most days, particularly at dawn, photographers line up to capture their own renditions of this lone birch tree, whose fight for survival adds to its allure.
Now missing a branch and bearing a twisted, gnarled appearance, it leaves some newcomers questioning its appeal.
“I first visited a couple of years ago.” shared one visitor. “I was like, what! ! ! But from the right angle and right weather conditions it's absolutely stunning.”
However resilience can only go so far and the Lonely Tree is nearing its twilight years. Having graced Y Glyn for at least 15 years, its caretakers predict that the tree may only have about a decade left before it eventually succumbs to nature.
Birch trees typically have a lifespan of 40-50 years, although some species can live much longer. However, the wardens at Padarn Country Park who oversee the woodlands are sceptical that their most renowned tree will reach this age.
