The travel industry at a crossroads: Wanderlust in a warming world

Daily Post

May 07, 2025

I'VE spent much of my life immersed in the world of travel, helping people plan unforgettable journeys, coordinate events, and discover corners of the world they'd only dreamed of.

- By Sophie Morris, a committee member of North Wales Business Club

‘There’s something magical about seeing the sparkle in someone's eyes as they experience something new and wonderful - whether a food, culture, architecture or nature in a different climate. Travel connects us; it always has. It breaks down barriers, opens minds, and brings, in my opinion, joy like few other things can.

But in recent years, another reality has crept into every conversation about travel: the planet.

Climate change is no longer some distant problem for future generations to worry about - it's happening now, and my industry has a huge role to play in how we respond.

‘There’s no getting around it: travel contributes to global emissions.

Aviation, in particular, leaves a sizeable footprint.

‘That's why we're seeing movements like “flight shaming” gain traction, especially in parts of Europe where rail options make skipping short-haul flights a realistic choice.

More people are talking about sustainability, which is great. But talk doesn't always translate into action.

I meet a lot of people who genuinely want to make more responsible travel choices.
