Missed chance costly for Moyes

DAVID Moyes learned a lot on Saturday.

Missed chance costly for Moyes

You could see through his team selection that he was thinking about the decisions he needs to make in the summer - no more so than in his choice of Armando Broja.

I could completely understand the decision to start him, even if Beto has been effective against the higher calibre defences the Blues have faced recently.

Moyes knows what Beto can do. Having watched him week-in, week-out since injuries to his rivals left him as the club's only option, Moyes has seen the good and the bad of the former Udinese striker.

Where that leaves him going forward, we will have to wait and see - the 27-year-old has had the highs of those crucial goals against Liverpool, Leicester City and Crystal Palace and the frustrations of those misses against the likes of Brentford and then at Anfield.

But either way, he has had plenty of exposure since Moyes’ arrival.

The same is not true of Broja, who has been held back by injuries but is known to have plenty of talent if his body will allow him to use it.

Everton need to sort out their frontline over the summer and understanding whether to try and make Broja part of it is useful.

This was another opportunity for him to give Moyes the evidence he needs to go to Chelsea and discuss whether another loan deal or a reduced fee could be on the table.

In my view, Broja struggled to take advantage on Saturday. I thought he did OK in his start at Nottingham Forest seven days earlier and was keen to see him again. But he needed to do more.

He looked like he was going through the motions, like he was playing within himself. I don't know if this was a result of the injuries he has been plagued by, because he is playing catch-up fitness-wise or maybe even confidence - there is no doubt he has had a tough year.

Yet for all that Manchester City have a talented defence, they have been vulnerable this season.
