PEOPLE TELL OF MOMENT ROOF BLOWN OFF BY WIND

- By DAVID POWELL Daily Post Reporter

It was like a scene from movie Twister ... scary

A LEISURE centre remained closed yesterday after part of the roof was torn off during Storm Bram winds.

People living close to Holyhead Leisure Centre on Anglesey described the scenes as being like "the movie Twister" as gale-force winds ripped part of the roof off the building on Tuesday.

Insulation blocks from the roof were blown hundreds of metres away from the building. The council is now taking stock of the damage, and said updates on the reopening of the site would be provided “when further information is available”.

The winds rose to 85mph in Capel Curig and 83mph in Aberdaron. Elsewhere, trees were blown down, roads were flooded and train services cancelled.

Online footage from the scene of the leisure centre shows a huge sheet splitting from the roof and landing metres away.

Yesterday, a pile of debris littered the car park. It was safely weighed down before it is taken for disposal.

Nia Shaw, who was visiting her daughter's house in Mill Road, saw the footage online.

She said: “It was like the movie Twister. It was scary.”
