TRENT ALEXANDER-ARNOLD admits he can understand the disappointment and frustration from Liverpool fans over his decision to leave the club at the end of the season.

- By PAUL GORST

The news will not come as a major shock for fans given the speculation that has raged all season, but confirmation of his plans will likely not be stomached any easier by those who have worshipped the defender.

In a chat with Liverpool's website, the 26-year-old accepted the move will be seen as a contentious one as he outlined his desire to challenge himself elsewhere, stopping short of revealing a switch to Real Madrid.

Alexander-Arnold said: "I've been a fan of this club my whole life, it has given me the opportunity to go and achieve everything.

"Growing up, seeing players leave that I've loved watching and have helped the team win trophies, you feel a connection to the players.
