Cooling conditions signal prime late-season trout fishing in the Midlands

A noticeable drop in temperatures across the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands has finally ushered in a long-awaited seasonal shift, bringing with it rapidly falling river levels and promising late-season fishing conditions.

With only light rainfall recorded over the past week—barely reaching double digits in most areas—river systems have responded swiftly.

After a summer marked by consistent rainfall, the speed at which water levels are receding has once again caught many by surprise.

However, a degree of atmospheric moisture remains, and with temperatures continuing to decline, the prospect of early winter snowfall is increasingly likely. Such snowfall would be a welcome development, helping sustain flows in typically dry winter streams.

For now, though, anglers are being urged to make the most of the closing window.

With approximately one month remaining in the river season, timing has become critical. As water temperatures continue to drop, trout are expected to conclude their spawning cycles and retreat, effectively bringing river fishing activity to a close.

Strong River Reports from Key Beats

Encouraging reports have emerged from Natal Fly Fishing Club (NFFC) waters, particularly along the Mooi and Bushman’s Rivers. Both systems have produced consistent results, with anglers reporting solid numbers of quality fish.

The Bushman’s River, in particular, has stood out. Catch returns indicate that nearly all fish exceeded the 10-inch (25cm) mark, with the majority falling within the 13-17 inch (33-43cm) range.

Notably, a handful of larger specimens measuring between 17-21 inches (43-53cm) have also been recorded.
