Broos backs young Bucs defender for Bafana's World Cup push
Daily News
|August 29, 2025
AS the countdown begins for the crucial 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers, Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has made a bold inclusion in his final 23-man squad: young and promising Orlando Pirates defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi.
At just 19 years old, Mbokazi is already carving a name for himself and is reportedly viewed by Broos as having the potential to shine on European soil.
Having quickly established himself as a central figure in the Pirates' defence since his promotion in January, Mbokazi has been instrumental in the club's pursuits this season.
In addition to his surge in performance, he has also been appointed one of the deputy captains for the current campaign, leading the team with composure and skill on several occasions.
His remarkable journey has seen him traverse the challenging stages of professional football while making high-profile appearances in critical matches.
The upcoming international break sees Bafana Bafana facing Lesotho on 5 September, followed by a highly anticipated clash against fierce rivals Nigeria on 9 September.
These matches are pivotal in the team’s quest for World Cup qualification, and Broos is keen to utilise the talents of young players like Mbokazi.
