Tale of Rob, war hero para-dog

A "VICTORIA Cross" awarded to a heroic dog which took part in daring SAS missions during the Second World War has gone up for sale.

The Dickin Medal is known as the animal equivalent of the VC.

It was given to Rob after he served in North Africa and Italy.

Para-dog Rob made 20 parachute jumps - one of which included being dropped behind enemy lines with the commandos to prepare the ground for the Allied invasion of Anzio in 1944.

He would be sent from the plane with a harness and parachute, attached to the plane by a static line that would cause it to open automatically.

On the ground, his role was to alert the soldiers of any danger by licking their faces as well as carrying important messages along the front line.
