The Prime Minister's remark was contained in a Downing Street press conference outlining plans to cut net migration by around 100,000 a year.

It sparked comparisons with Enoch Powell's “rivers of blood” speech of 1968, when the Tory shadow minister also said people were becoming “strangers in their own country”. The vile speech led to Powell being sacked as shadow defence secretary by then-leader Edward Heath.
