Jailed postmaster seeks retrial

A POSTMASTER serving life for murdering his wife says he would rather have a retrial to prove his innocence than walk free from jail.

- BY JEREMY ARMSTRONG

Robin Garbutt, 60, has spent almost 15 years going through legal papers in jail to "seek justice" for his wife Diana.

He remains adamant she was killed by a robber at their Post Office in Melsonby, North Yorks, in March 2010 and friends, neighbours, a private investigator and a legal expert are trying to clear his name.

A three-part Sky documentary, Murder at the Post Office, raises questions about the safety of his conviction. It features Garbutt's diary entries and testimony from experts. Garbutt has launched a fourth application to take his case to the Court of Appeal.

After a failed appeal bid in 2015, he wrote: "I feel like I have let Di down again. The killers are still out there."

His trial jury heard he was financially struggling and in 2011 Teesside crown court heard him say they did not have enough sex, and that she joined a dating website. Diana had admitted to a fling with another man at a party and admirers had sent her messages on the night she died - but Garbutt's barrister said she had not replied.

The Horizon scandal cast doubt on financial records suggesting Garbutt had his hand in the Post Office till.
