Iron Age's rare battle trumpet is unearthed

A BATTLE trumpet is among a hoard of Iron Age objects discovered on a routine archeological dig.

The animal-headed bronze instrument, called a carnyx, was used by Celtic tribes across Europe to inspire their warriors.

They fascinated the Romans, who frequently took them as war trophies.

This example is one of only three known from Britain and is one of the most complete found in Europe, Historic England said. The routine excavation was on private land in west Norfolk last summer.
